Review Time! #6

New Girl by Paige Harbison
New GirlThey call me 'New Girl'...

Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.

Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy. And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.

Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend…but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. I wish it were that easy. Sometimes, when I think of Max, I can imagine how Becca’s life was so much better than mine could ever be.

And maybe she’s still out there, waiting to take it back. (from goodreads.com)

About the book:
The story switches between the view point of new girl (you don;t know her name until the very end) and Becca Normandy. The view point of new girl is in the present and Becca's is the previous year.

At the end of term in the previous year Becca goes missing. No one knows where she is, if she is alive, if she has just run off to have a supposed baby? When new girl turns up the next year replacing Becca for her finally year at school, she is judged and put down because no one wants her there, they want Becca. Her roommate Dana wants to believe that Becca is still alive and puts new girl through hell because of it. To new girl, Blake is really her only friend who stands by her and then there is Johnny and Max Holloway both were into Becca and both drawn to new girl.

Becca is the sort of character that you love to hate, because of how she is written you see the side of her that no one else did. To the reader you see the manipulative, lying ways of Becca but to the other characters you see the girl who has it all, perfect boyfriend, money and all the friends you want. The only character that really see's who Becca is her boyfriend, Max. Although they really broke up but Becca pretended that they were still together, Max couldn't stand Becca. Espically when he found out that Becca was cheating on her with his best friend.

While new girl is the complete opposite to Becca, she is nice and caring. While she and Max have a complicated relationship, mainly because of Becca and that she is friends with Johnny, they would have to make the book more interesting as you can see that they like each other and that they should just get together.

The characterisation overall is what makes new girl a hard to put down book, Harbison makes everything flow between the two points of view making them all correspond each other but a year apart, so when you have new girl graduating you find out what really happened to Becca that fateful night.

Rating: 4/5
