Review #23

Hooked by Liz Fichera

When Native American Fredericka ‘Fred’ Oday is invited to become the only girl on the school’s golf team, she can’t say no. This is an opportunity to shine, win a scholarship and go to university, something no one in her family has done.

But Fred’s presence on the team isn’t exactly welcome — especially not to rich golden boy Ryan Berenger, whose best friend was kicked off the team to make a spot for Fred.

But there’s no denying that things are happening between the girl with the killer swing and the boy with the killer smile...

GET HOOKED ON A GIRL NAMED FRED (from goodreads)

Fred has spent the summer at the golfing range at the local country club where her father works. This Native American girl at school is shy, hanging out with her friends from the reservation, but when given the opportunity to play on the schools golf team she has a chance of a scholarship, heading of to college, becoming something more than a girl from the reservation.

However, everything comes with a consequence. Fred's spot on the team didn't come for free, she has to overcome the fact the team doesn't want her there because she took the place of one of their own. Fichera doesn't shy away from the sexist & racism that happens to Fred, her team mates are white, rich & think that they are entitled to be on the team because of that. The team captain Ryan has these views on Fred when she joins the team taking his best friends spot.

Fred is such a resilient character who uses golf to overcome the problems that she faces with the team, her family & culture. Despite the culture differences between Fred & Ryan they connect through golf, once Ryan sees how good of a player Fred is, it allows the readers to see that even cultural differences between two people they can connect through something common. Ryan at first wasn't a very likable character with the way he treated Fred, however, he does become a character that you can enjoy & understand his own issues.

Hooked is a book for those who love Miranda Kenneally's Catching Jordan & Stealing Parker. Hooked is a sport & romance YA contempory which shows you that there is more to the colour of someones skin & gender.

Rating: 4.5/5
