Review Time! #14

The Selection by Kiera Cass
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.(from goodreads.com)

The Selection is a cross of The Hunger Games and The Goddess Test, well thats what I think. However it was still a great read!

America only enters the Selection as a bribe from her mother and a plee from her boyfriend. America is a 5, her boyfriend a 6, meaning that her family would never go for it. America is a singer and a musician which is what a 5's family does while Aspen is a 6, a servant for 3's and 4's, he doesn't have a lot of money so he doesn't want America to have this life.

The Selection takes America to Prince Maxon's palace to compete for his heart with 34 other girls. But the thing is that America doesn't want to be there, she wants Aspen. However after insulting Maxon they become friends, he finds her different from the other girls as she likes all the simplistic things and as she helps him understand the sudden influx of girls in his home.

The characters are each unique and complex, America has her own style which the Prince loves so when the other girls try to copy her she changes it up so she is still unique. Maxon, you cannot help but fall in love with Maxon! He is sweet, caring and has NO idea how to act around females, it's kinda cute. Aspen, Aspen, Aspen we have a love/hate relationship, but your intruiging. The girls in the selection are each different and have their own way of acting whether like a bitch or a good friend.

The Selection is a great YA debut, one of the best I've read so far! So everyone get out their and go pick up a copy!

P.S the ending almost killed me, 2013 should hurry up just so I can see what happens!

Rating: 4.5/5

  1. I wanted to read this book because of the cover...there's some serious cover love for this one. Sounds like an interesting book though, I really like the sound of America trying to stay unique in a group that's out to be like her.

    Great review Keely!
